MORNING REPORT – March 6, 2014

Heads of states in Europe plan to discuss the intensified crisis in Ukraine today. Upcoming vote could make Crimea a part of Russia. China’s State Department releases damning report on America’s Human Rights abuses. Another delay – the 29th – of Obamacare. This one for two years. North Korea now has kamakazi drones. And President Obama declares America is under threat.

Welcome to the Thursday edition of “5 Things to Know for Your New Day.”

1. CRIMEA TO BECOME PART OF RUSSIA IN 10 DAYS?

Diplomacy in high gear: It’s another day of high-stakes diplomacy in a confrontation reminiscent of the Cold War. The Crimean Parliament has made a decision to hold a vote from all the people of Crimea in 10 days to decide whether Crimea will remain Ukraine or become a part of Russia. Interim Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk calls this decision “illegitimate.” But Lawmakers in the Crimea region have already voted in favor of leaving Ukraine for Russia. They are leaving the final decision to the people. Russia already has the Black Sea Peninsula under de facto control, It is not clear how such a split could geographically take place if the referendum endorses the move.

2. CHINA PUBLISHES A REPORT ON AMERICA’S HUMAN RIGHTS ABUSES

Those who live in glass houses: The State Council Information Office of the People’s Republic of China has published a report titled “Human Rights Record of the United States in 2013.” In part the report says the State Department of the United States, which posed as “the world judge of human rights,” made arbitrary attacks and irresponsible remarks on the human rights situation in almost 200 countries and regions again in its just-released Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 2013. However, the U.S. carefully concealed and avoided mentioning its own human rights problems. In fact, there were still serious human rights problems in the U.S in 2013, with the situation in many fields even deteriorating. It goes on to cite many examples.

3. A TWO-YEAR OBAMACARE DELAY OFFERED – IF IT WORKS

The Obama administration has announced that it will let people keep health insurance plans that would otherwise be out of compliance with ObamaCare for another two years, in a delay Republicans portrayed as an election-year ploy.

The administration had already given people a one-year reprieve after millions had their health plans canceled last year, despite President Obama’s promises that people could keep their plans if they wanted. The so-called “fix” was meant to ease the transition as well as the political headache for Democrats — but the “fix,” and the latest extension, will have limited impact, since it is up to individual insurance companies and state commissioners whether to re-offer canceled policies.

4. NORTH KOREA HAS DEVELOPED KAMAKAZI-TYPE DRONES

North Korea has deployed an indigenous unmanned aerial vehicle capable of attacking ground targets based on stolen U.S. target drones, the Pentagon revealed in a report to Congress. Images of the North Korean drone in flight were shown as part of a March 2013 military drill. The Pentagon report said. “The drone appeared to be a North Korean copy of a Raytheon MQM-107 Streaker target drone,” North Korean press coverage of the event described the UAV as being capable of precision strikes by crashing into the target.”

5. PRESIDENT OBAMA DECLARES OUR NATIONAL SECURITY THREATENED

America under threat: President Barack Obama today signed an Executive Order which designated the ongoing crisis in Ukraine “an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States.” The order allows the administration to impose visa restrictions on Russians and Crimeans which are identified as threats to Ukraine’s security or territorial integrity.
