It gives me no small comfort to know that those people God used most have a lot to answer for. If God can love and use people like Jacob or King David, which He did, then He can surely love and use you and me. I find this very encouraging. For one thing, these two men were possibly the worst parents described in the Old Testament.
It may come as no great surprise to you that many biblical giants had skeletons in their cupboards. Except that their skeletons did not remain there. The biblical writers told that all – unlike most biographies about people in recent centuries in which you seldom read very much that would embarrass them if they were alive. We want our heroes on pedestals! Biographers, not to mention those who write autobiographies, are pretty careful not to make the person look too bad. But Holy Scripture does not omit or gloss over the defects of its heroes. You can read for yourself! In any case, we will examine some of them and see how they managed to live with themselves after they made such horrid mistakes. Some of these giants had awful memories to cope with.
I am not sure if the concept of forgiving oneself was consciously uppermost in the minds of those who lived in biblical times. This kind of language might come around more recently. But one thing is for sure: human nature has not changed one bit and 4000 years, and what is equally important to remember, they, like us, had consciences; they all had to live with themselves. You may be sure some of them felt guilt and shame for their ethical and moral failures. One of the reasons I have waited a good while to write this present book after Total Forgiveness was that I needed to be sure how to treat some of these people and see whether they had a problem with forgiving themselves and whether they did it.
