From the Reach More Now news desk in Fort Worth, Texas, this is Ray Mossholder and this is the news.
I begin with a news bulletin: According to Fox News, Supreme Court justice Antonin Scalia, the judicial standard–bearer of the conservative movement is dead. It was discovered this morning when he did not appear for breakfast. His death means President Obama will have an unprecedented chance to try to shift the balance of the court during his final year in office – setting up a Senate battle in the heat of an election year.
And now the campaign news……
Any presidential candidate even this early in the race would be thrilled to have 40% of Americans ready to vote for them. That’s exactly where Donald Trump stands tonight. Following his huge win in New Hampshire, many political pundits are saying the Donald is about to sweep the table nationally. Trump, in fact, has 44% support from all registered Republicans and 44% from all Republican leaning independent voters. As Donald would say “That’s HUGE!”
Texas Senator Ted Cruz comes way back in second place with 17%. There is a tie for third at 10% between Marco Rubio and Doctor Ben Carson. Bringing up the rear are Jeb Bush at 8% and John Kasich at 4%.
Trump now has a 67% favorability rating, Rubio a 62% favorability rating, and Ted Cruz 61% nationally. Trump’s ratings have climbed 6% in the national race since the New Hampshire primary. He has a 17% lead going into Tuesday’s primary in South Carolina.
By the way, if you’re wondering why I reported seven Republican candidates that were still in the running yesterday and only six today, it’s because former Virginia Governor Jim Gilmore has suspended his campaign, dropping out after being told by CBS that he was the only candidate whose poll numbers are so low he would not be among the Republicans at tonight’s debate.
This debate will be held at the Peace Center in Greenville, South Carolina. John Dickerson, the host of “Face The Nation” will be the lead moderator with Major Garrett, the chief White House correspondent for CBS, and Kimberly Strassal of the Wall Street Journal doing the questioning. The debate could shake up the polls a lot. As with every other state, the looky-loos haven’t yet made up their mind who to vote for.
In Thursday night’s debate with Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton promised to carry on and enlarge the vision President Obama has introduced to America. She said she plans to be following in Barack Obama’s footsteps. But Hillary is already sidestepping one of them. In order to get her elected, the Democratic National Committee has canceled the restrictions that the President instigated in 2008 that blocked the nations from federal lobbyists and political action committees. Obama said that if lobbyists can give millions of dollars to their candidate, any lobbyist or PAC representative will obviously expect favors once their candidate is elected.
What ignoring this fact does is to return the Democratic National Committee to their wheeling and dealing past, pre-2008, where backroom deals with the deep–pocket rich were plentiful in bypassing the majority will of the people for their own will.
With Clinton, black lives REALLY matter and so do wealthy whites. Without these two demographics voting for her in large number throughout America, her ship will sink as quickly as it did in 2008 when Barack Obama fired the winning volley across her bow. In the New Hampshire primary, Hillary got 55% of voters with annual salaries of a hundred thousand dollars or more. There weren’t enough black people in that state to make a difference. But Bernie Sanders won in every other demographic. South Carolina is a very different story with a large black voting population. If Hillary doesn’t win big there, her losing campaign will be the handwriting on the wall. In that case, she would have to rely on her Superdelegate votes at the Democratic convention. Many political pundits consider that Hillary’s silver lining.
Donald Trump won with every area of New Hampshire voters – men, women, rich, poor, and voters of all age groups.
Negative ads against Donald Trump aren’t just coming from the Democrats but from the Republican candidates too. They are calling him “phony” and saying that he is “supported by the lobbyists and multibillionaires”. Trump just laughs it off and points out that these candidates attacking him ” spend a fortune, and special interests and lobbyists put up the money for these negative ads.” The Donald is paying his own way throughout the presidential race.
Trump says he would love to run against Hillary Clinton or the “communist” Bernie Sanders. (Those are Trump’s own words.)
Hillary accuses Trump for offending Muslims. She says Muslims will be needed on the front line in the battle against Isis.
Hillary also says that although she has received the most Wall Street donors ever, she stood up to Wall Street and helped pass Dodd Frank. Bernie Sanders countered by asking why Wall Street and other big corporations are giving millions of dollars to support Hillary. Bernie asks “Do you think they are doing it just for fun? They just like to throw money around?”
Bernie continued in their last debate by asking Hillary why multibillionaire George Soros (well-known for his communist stance) is giving many millions of dollars towards Hillary’s campaign. Hillary is responding by asking if there’s any difference between that and the millions the Koch brothers are giving certain Republican candidates for their campaigns.
The debate tonight most likely will feature an all-out brawl between the Donald and Ted Cruz. Donald Trump says Cruz is “cruising for a bruising” because of all the negative ads Cruz has been running against Trump. Meanwhile, Cruz says “There’s more than a little irony in Donald accusing anybody of being nasty, given the amazing torrent of insults and obscenities that come out of his mouth on any given day. Every day Donald Trump comes out with a new attack.”
Marco Rubio has all of his chips riding on tonight’s Republican debate. It is probable that Marco will be the center of attention, being attacked in such a way as to drown his presidential hopes. Both Ted Cruz and Jeb Bush will say everything they can to show him as a youngster who is unprepared for the presidency.
The rest of the Bushes are jumping in to help Jeb pull his flailing presidential campaign out of the fire. Jeb Bush and his wife Laura are telling friends they are bewildered and simply can’t figure out why Donald Trump is so far ahead of him in the national polls. No one came into this race with greater expectations and with a seemingly unlimited amount of money from millionaire backers than Jeb did. Jeb’s ninety-year-old mom has already been stumping for him and George W. Bush who has stayed out of the limelight for all of Obama’s reign thus far, is also getting on to the campaign rally stage to try to lift his brother’s chances.
Doctor Ben Carson, the retired neurosurgeon, has appeared weak in the most recent Republican debates. He’s had a disaster with his campaign managers and his finances. One of his campaign workers was killed in an auto accident. He has also shown a lack of knowledge in foreign affairs. But tonight he says he will be far more boisterous than anyone has yet seen him. He says “With only five others on the stage, it will be a whole lot easier to speak up and be heard.”
Unless some miracle happens, tonight’s debate will almost certainly be the last for Ohio Governor John Kasich, in spite of the fact that he finished second only to Trump in the New Hampshire primary. Miracles do happen. Several hundred South Carolina voters were out to see him today outside a barbecue restaurant called Mutts. Kasich attacked no other candidates, but in the shivering cold he talked about people who have no one who cares about them, and he called two boys on stage to remind them that nothing good comes from messing around with drugs.
Jeb Bush hasn’t taken Kasich’s second place finish in New Hampshire lightly. He is going after Kasich with both barrels in spite of Kasich’s odds beyond Carolina
John Kasich’s moving statement may indeed be his last hurrah. “Do you know how many people that we know in our lives that we run past 1000 miles an hour, we don’t stop and look them in the eye and ask them how they’re doing? It’s like a drive-by. There are a lot of people out there and no one ever celebrates with them. And there are people out there who in the kitchen now have defeats and tears, and no one ever cries with them. We have to pull our families and our communities in our neighborhoods together.”
And finally, I received this is as a joke in my email but everything said to Hillary is true……
