Left Behind-The Kids: Escape To Masada Chapter 6 – Manny’s Decision

Vicki ate some fruit and toast and tried to fight fatigue. She didn’t know how long she had been up or how long she had been running on adrenaline. It had to catch up soon, but she reminded herself of their mission. Claudia Zander was out there, running from the GC, and needed help. At least, that’s what she said.

Vicki drank coffee and winced. It perked her up a little but left a bad taste. Another gang member walked into the garage and came out a few minutes later and spoke to the man with the gun.

“What do we do about Claudia?” Vicki asked.

“If they let us go,” Mark said, I say we go get her.”

Vicki put the cell phone in her lap and re-dialed the Wisconsin hideout. Darrion answered and sounded like she had been asleep. Vicki spoke softly and told Darrion what had happened. “Have we gotten any more messages from Claudia?”

“I’ll check,” Darrion said. The girl asked someone to wake up. Probably Janie, Vicki thought.

“Okay, it looks like a message came in from her a few minutes ago.”

“Read it.”

“‘Dear Young Trib Force, it looks like time is running out. I don’t think I can wait much longer. Please tell me if you’re coming or not, Claudia."”

The man with the gun stirred, walking closer.

“Write her back and tell her –”

“Hey, no phone calls!” the man yelled.

“– to stay where she is. Will be at her place as soon as we can get there.”

“I said, no phone calls!” the man said, grabbing the phone and turning it off.

“She’s not calling the GC,” Manny said.

“Shut up, traitor!”

Manny stood eyes flashing. “I may traitor? I’d like to see how long you would last in a GC jail cell, Carlos. How long would you hold out until you squealed on your friends and turned them in.”

“I know one thing,” Carlos answered. “I wouldn’t use religion as a crutch.”

Left Behind-The Kids: ESCAPE TO MASADA Chapter 3 – Flashing Lights

While Mark phoned their hideout in Wisconsin, Vicki talked with Manny. He apologized for his mistake and said he wouldn’t blame them if they turned around and headed for safety.

“We decided a long time ago that we would do whatever we could to help people understand the message,” Vicki said. “We want to stay away from Peacekeepers and Morale Monitors, but our first priority is teaching people with the truth.”

Manny looked out the window. “I’ve been practicing what I’ll say to Hector and the others. I’m not sure I can speak as well as you.”

“You want me to go with you?”

“I couldn’t ask that.”

Mark hung up the cell phone. “Colin is ticked. He wants us to turn around.”

Manny scratched his head. “Which one is Colin?”

“Colin Dial, the guy who owns the house where were staying. He said we should get out of here and they’d figure out another way to help Claudia.”

Manny sighed and reached for the door handle. “I guess this is where I get out.”

“Stay where you are,” Mark barked. “Some of the others were up and I talked to them on the speakerphone. They all thought after Claudia’s latest email that we should –”

“She wrote again?” Vicki asked.

Mark nodded. “She said she’s leaving her hotel by noon today and wants to know where she should go.”

“Yeah. They said they would send her instructions before noon.”

“Good,” Vicki said. “That makes it sound like were going to send a message rather than show up.”

“The kids voted to make Claudia our priority,” Mark continued. “If we can help Manny meet with his friends and do it safely, they gave us the thumbs–up.”

Left Behind-The Kids: ESCAPE TO MASADA Chapter 2 – The Sacrifice

Lionel raced into the crowd and caught up with Sam as the boy fell to the ground and buried his face in his hands. Lionel note beside him and put a hand on his shoulder.

“Look!” a man behind them shouted. “He’s preparing the sacrifice!”

The holy men cried out, tearing their robes as Nicolae approached the huge pig. In the street, the animal had been slowed and seemed drugged. Now it was thrashing around, squealing, and straining at the ropes. Two men struggled to hold it as Nicolae laughed. He jumped at the animal and slipped, the pig dodging him.

“Want to play?” Nicolae howled. Then he leapt onto the pig’s back, sending the animal to its knees. For the next few seconds the pig tried to knock Nicolae off, but it was no use. Finally, Carpathia plunged his knife into the animals throat.

Nicolae fell to the ground, a flood of blood soaking his clothes. The pig went wild, thrashing and pulling its handlers. As the blood flow showed, the pig fell and Nicolae cupped his hands under its neck. Lionel had to look away.

The crying and wailing of the holy men reached a crescendo and one priest screamed, “He has thrown the animals blood on the altar!”

Lionel couldn’t watch the gory scene that followed, but he could hear Nicolae trying to butcher the animal. Lionel turned to Sam. “Come with us. We’re leaving soon.”

“I must stay with my people,” Sam whispered. “These men need to know that Jesus is the perfect sacrifice. How will they know of someone doesn’t tell them?”

“I understand, but –”to

More shots from the crowd stopped Lionel. He stood for a better view of the screen. Nicolae had given the order to take the pig away and bring in his image. The holy men went berserk.
