Left Behind: Apollyon Chapter 14 Left Behind: Apollyon Chapter 14

Buck, thrilled but also grieving and exhausted, caught another cab to within two blocks of Chaim Rosenzweig’s. Still wearing his headgear, he walked close enough to see that the GC’s were long gone. The gateman, Jonas, dozed at his post.

Knowing neither Jonas nor Chaim professed faith yet, Buck hesitated. He knew Chaim was at least learning the truth about Carpathia and would not turn Buck in. Jonas was a gamble. Buck didn’t know if the man spoke or understood English, having heard him speak only Hebrew. The man had to know some English,as the first contact with visitors?

Emboldened by the exhilarating challenges of Eli and Moishe, Buck took a deep breath, gently touched an itching stitched wound below his eye, and walked directly to the gatehouse.

He didn’t want to startle the man, but he had to wake him. He tossed a pebble at the window. Jonas did not stir. Buck knocked lightly, then more loudly. Still he did not rouse. Finally Buck opened the door and gently touched Jonas’s arm. A burly man in his late fifties, Jonas leaped to his feet, eyes wild. Buck whipped off his disguise, then realized his face had to look horrible. Red, blotched, swollen, stitched, he looked like a monster.

Jonas must have taken the removal of the headdress as a challenge. Unarmed, he grabbed a huge flashlight from his belt and reared back with it. Buck spun away, wincing at the very thought of a blow to his tender face. “It’s me, Jonas! Cameron Williams!”

Jonas put his free hand to his heart, forgetting to lower the flashlight. “Oh, Mr. Williams!” he said, his English so broken and labored that Buck hardly recognized his own name.

Finally Jonas put the light away and used both hands to help communicate, gesturing with every phrase. “They,” he said ominously, pointing outside and waving as if to indicate a sea of people, “been looked for you.” He pointed to his own eyes.

Left Behind-The Kids Darkening Skies Chs 5&6 Janie’s New Religion, Mr. Stein’s Story

Mark has rescued Melinda from the GC police. They fled them on the motorcycle that they later had to drown. They are in hiding, but somehow Janie has escaped from a reeducation center and found them. In Jerusalem, Judd and Lionel are also in hiding. They are at a safehouse and Judd mistakingly thinks that Rayford Steele has been killed. Meanwhile, Vicki, Conrad, Darrion, Shelley, and Charlie, are in the schoolhouse that Z prepared for them. Conrad is in the tower above the schoolhouse watching out for any sign of the GC police.

CONRAD sat in the tower, watching for any sign of the Global Community. He used a flashlight to read a printout of Tsion Ben-Judah’s latest teaching. The teaching was so interesting, he had to be careful not to get too absorbed. Late that night he took a break and closed his eyes for a moment. He ran his hand along the floor and felt a weird bump. A piece of wood stuck up about an inch. He placed his hand on the other side of the plank and pushed. The board gave an inch or two, and Conrad was able to get his fingers underneath. As he pulled, other boards lifted. Conrad put his flashlight near the hole. Some sort of box fit perfectly inside. Conrad tried to lift the board, but it wouldn’t budge. The box was decorated with fancy etchings. He shifted his weight to try again, but just then something moved in the woods. Phoenix growled below. Conrad peered into the darkness and took out his pistol. He quickly ran downstairs and woke Vicki. Vicki let Phoenix loose, and the dog headed for the road, then quickly darted into the woods, barking. Conrad listened closely. The barking stopped. Footsteps. Had something or someone killed Phoenix? Conrad cocked his pistol and waited. Three figures moved out of the woods. Conrad lifted the gun and pointed it as he clicked on the flashlight.

“Don’t shoot!” Mark said, squinting into the light.
