Rayford has now discovered, much to his joy, that his helicopter pilot friend, Mac MacCullum, has become a Christian. Rayford has been told two different things about his wife, Amanda. Carpathia (the Antichrist) has told him that Amanda was killed in a plane crash. But Carpathia told Mac that Amanda has been working for him as a spy since before all the time she’s been married to Rayford. Meanwhile, Buck is still searching hard for his wife, Chloe. He has been told by a doctor that Chloe was badly injured and that she is in a hospital in Minnesota. He has also been told by the doctor that it is next to impossible to drive to Minnesota with all the torn up roads and highways and the jammed traffic between Chicago and there. Ray picks the story up at this point.

Vicki has been captured by other members of the Global Police and is now in a jail cell awaiting trial. Judd got away.  She has had to go through hours of interrogation from two girls, Melinda and Felicia, who hate her and are also part of the Global Police. They believe Vicki murdered Mrs. Jennes, their high school principal, and they couldn’t be more wrong. Judd just got in touch with Christian Rabbi Tsion Ben Judah by computer. Judd and Ryan searched the room again, taking out every book and every drawer. Nothing. Early Sunday morning, Ryan suggested they have some kind of church service.


“Let’s get Tsion in on it too,” Judd said.


Tsion joined them by computer. Judd felt weird singing with just two other people. They sang softly so they wouldn’t be detected.  Tsion asked Ryan to read a passage from Luke.


Ryan read, “‘As they were walking along someone said to Jesus, “I will follow you no matter where you go.” But Jesus replied “Fox’s have dens to live in, and birds have nests, but I, the Son of Man, have no home of my own, not even a place to lay my head.”‘”


“There is a great cost to following Jesus,”Tsion said. “Those who were his disciples did not realize it at the time, and I confess I am like them. And you are as well. We had no idea what would happen, and where God would take us. But here we are. God be praised.”

Supreme Deception: Family Research Counsel’s response


This is Ray Mossholder. Tony Perkins is one of the godliest and finest Christian leaders I’ve ever known. One of the highest honors I’ve ever had was to be asked by Tony Perkins to argue along with him before the Texas Supreme Court in Austin as we stood against no-fault divorce. We won.


Tony is the President of Family Life Counsel, and with all the work he’s done on behalf of marriage between one woman/one man marriage in America, I know he needs our prayers to encourage him following the United States sanctioning of same-sex marriage to be equal  to the kind of marriages he’s fought so long to uphold.


Tony Perkins released this statement directly folowing the Supreme Court’s decision:  


 Today, in one breathtaking move, the nation’s highest court took for itself the power reserved for its people — overturning the votes of millions of Americans and demanding that they walk away from millennia of human history, human nature, and the explicit teachings of Scripture in the process. Exactly two years after this court took an iron gavel to federal marriage law, the same justices came back to finish the job — inventing a sweeping “right” to same-sex marriage no founding father intended.


Are we disappointed? Yes — but not surprised by an increasingly activist Court that sees itself as super-legislators. While five justices may have trampled the will of more than 50 million people, they do not have the moral authority to redefine marriage. Just as Americans refused to accept the Court’s decision on abortion 42 years as legitimate, they will not accept this one. Like the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling, this all but ensures that America will not achieve broad social consensus on marriage. Why? Because it will be used to rob Americans of their rights in the marketplace, in the education of their children, and most importantly, in the expression of their beliefs on marriage.


And we are not alone in that view. Justice Samuel Alito in his dissent signals far more than the death of marriage. “Today’s decision will also have a fundamental effect on this Court and its ability to uphold the rule of law. If a bare majority of Justices can invent a new right and impose that right on the rest of the country, the only real limit on what future majorities will be able to do is their own sense of what those with political power and cultural influence are willing to tolerate.”


Desperate to justify their overreach, one that cannot be supported by the Constitution, history, or even human tradition, the majority insists that there are “changing definitions of marriage,” “where new dimensions of freedom become apparent.” Wrong. The nature of marriage has never changed — and never will. As Congressman Joe Pitts (R-Pa.) powerfully reminded people, marriage was the union of a man and woman at the time of the Fourteenth Amendment, at the Founding of our country, and in every time and place until 2004. Even then, no court overturned natural law. And today, no court can — not even the Supreme Court of the United States. What God imprinted on the human heart, no judge can change.


For 11 years, homosexual activists have hidden behind the black robes of the court, trying to force their will on America before people wake up to the devastation. Today, in the court’s arrogance, they succeeded — swatting away the democratic expression of 50 million people like gnats on a humid day. “Today’s decree,” Justice Antonin Scalia fumes, “says that my Ruler, and the Ruler of 320 million Americans coast-to-coast, is a majority of the nine lawyers on the Supreme Court. The opinion in these cases is the furthest extension in fact… This practice of constitutional revision by an unelected committee of nine, always accompanied (as it is today) by extravagant praise of liberty, robs the People of the most important liberty they asserted in the Declaration of Independence and won in the Revolution of 1776: the freedom to govern themselves.” Chief Justice John Roberts agreed, noting with poignancy, “If you are among the many Americans — of whatever sexual orientation — who favor expanding same-sex marriage, by all means celebrate today’s decision. Celebrate the achievement of a desired goal. Celebrate the opportunity for a new expression of commitment to a partner. Celebrate the availability of new benefits. But do not celebrate the Constitution. It had nothing to do with it.”


If the President, his party, and this court think that they have resolved this controversial issue, they’re mistaken. By disenfranchising 50 million Americans, in a decision divorced of law and logic, they have only poured fuel on the fire. Forty years ago, many people thought — as some might today — that the battle for life was lost. Over time, our movement and technology helped to change people’s hearts and minds to a new understanding of the sanctity of the unborn child. And we will do it again. As more Americans see and feel the erosion of religious liberty, of parental rights, of children’s innocence, and of conscience rights, their opinions will no longer be swayed by emotions and popular opinion — but by transcendent truth and inevitable consequences that come from its rejection.


With this ruling, there is no doubt the Court has set in motion some dark days for religious liberty. But in that darkness will come a great Light, if believers hold firm to faith and continue speaking into the culture the uncompromising word of God. “This decision shows one thing: our desperate need for the next Great Awakening, and the hope of the Gospel given to all persons,” Dr. Ronnie Floyd admonished. “We must rise up like never before with great urgency, to forward the message of Jesus Christ to every person in America.”


The times of testing are coming — just as they have come to every generation of God’s faithful. But we will not stop standing for truth. And as conservatives, we will not be standing alone. In statement after statement, interview after interview, great leaders from across this country are making it clear: this is not over. From Governor’s mansions to statehouse floors, the message is determined and resolved. “Millions of Americans have voted to preserve traditional marriage, with the knowledge that moms and dads raising kids in a stable home is essential to a healthy nation,” Congressman Bill Flores (R-Texas) vowed. “I remain committed to restoring the right of Americans to decide this question for themselves, at the ballot box or through their state legislature.” GOP presidential candidates — the same ones the media criticized for not sayingenough about marriage — blasted the Court for ripping the decision out of the people’s hands and making a mockery of states’ rights. “The only outcome worse than this flawed, failed decision would be for the President and Congress, two co-equal branches of government, to surrender in the face of this out-of-control act of unconstitutional, judicial tyranny,” Mike Huckabee declared. “The Supreme Court can no more repeal the laws of nature and nature’s God on marriage than it can the law of gravity.”


The chorus of opposition grew until the responses came pouring in from all sides: theRepublican National CommitteeSpeaker John Boehner (R-Ohio); Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.); Reps. Vicky Hartzler (R-Mo.) Doug Lamborn (R-Colo.), Bill Flores (R-Texas), Ted Yoho (R-Fla.), Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), Steve Scalise (R-La.), John Fleming (R-La.),Louie Gohmert (R-Texas), Randy Forbes (R-Va.), Mike Kelly (R-Pa.); Senators Marco Rubio(R-Fla.), Rick SantorumLindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Tim Scott (R-S.C.),Roy Blunt (R-Mo.), Ben Sasse (R-Nebr.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), Dan Coats (R-Ind.),Governors Scott Walker (R-Wisc.), Mike HuckabeeRick PerryBobby Jindal (R-La.), Jeb BushCarly Fiorina, and more. In Texas, Attorney General Ken Paxton promised voters that local officials will not act until the leaders of the state exhaust all of their options. His boss, Governor Greg Abbott (R), fired back at the Court with a statewide directive protecting anyone with sincere beliefs from being punished by the government for “granting or denying benefits, managing agency employees, entering or enforcing agency contracts, licensing and permitting decisions, or enforcing state laws and regulations.” Together, they are telling America: the court may have had the last word on marriage, but it will not have the final one.


For those who are called to such a time as this, the moment has been given to us to stand firm. And that is what we will do. Calvary, Shannon Royce told our staff earlier, must have seemed like the darkest day in the world — but it was really just the beginning of victory. This is a disheartening decision, to be sure. But we will not let a court’s definition of marriage define us.For “the plan of the Lord stands forever, the designs of his heart through all generations. Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon those who fear him, upon those who count on his mercy. To deliver their soul from death and to keep them alive through famine. May your mercy, Lord, be upon us; as we put our hope in you” (Psalm 33).

    Police in  Oakland , CA spent two hours attempting to subdue a gunman who had  barricaded himself inside his home. After  firing ten tear gas canisters, officers discovered that the  man was standing beside  them in the police line, shouting, ‘Please come out and give yourself  up.’

  2. *WHAT WAS PLAN B?*

    An  Illinois man, pretending to have a gun, kidnapped a motorist and forced him to drive to two different automated teller machines, wherein the kidnapper proceeded to withdraw money from his own bank accounts.

  3. *THE  GETAWAY!*

    A man walked into a Topeka, Kansas Kwik Stop and asked for all the money in the cash drawer.  Apparently the  take was too small, so he tied up the store clerk and worked  the counter himself for three hours until police showed up and grabbed him.
    5. *DID I SAY  THAT?*
    Police in Los Angeles had good luck with a  robbery suspect who just couldn’t control himself during a lineup.  When detectives asked each man in  the lineup to repeat the words:  ‘Give me all your money or I’ll shoot’, the man  shouted, ‘that’s not what I said!’

  4. *ARE WE COMMUNICATING?*

    A  man spoke frantically into the phone: ‘My wife is pregnant and  her contractions are only two minutes apart’.  ‘Is this her first child?’ the  doctor asked. ‘No!’ the man shouted, ‘This is her husband!’

  5. *HERE’S A MEATY STORY* A New Jersey man whose last name is Bacon was arrested after a dispute over sausage, according to police.

Thomas Bacon, 19, allegedly attacked another person at a Madison home on May 12 for eating the last piece of sausage. Bacon was charged with simple assault and released pending a court appearance. The man Bacon attacked said when being interviwed “Bacon is a weenie!”

Equifax, a credit reporting agency, lost a whole lot of money because they didn’t believe in God.


A New York City man whose first name is God has settled a lawsuit with Equifax because they had refused to recognize his name as legitimate. Under the agreement reached in a Brooklyn federal court this week, Equifax will enter God Gazarov’s name into its database. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed. Gazarov now has a robust 820 credit score. He says he was shocked by Equifax’s refusal to acknowledge his moniker.


The Russian native is a Brooklyn jewelry store owner who is named after his grandfather. He says it’s a relatively common name in Russia.


He told the New York Post he’s relieved that the matter has been settled and he plans to buy a new BMW.


Lawyers for Equifax declined to comment.

    In Modesto, CA, Steven Richard King was arrested  for trying to hold up a Bank of America branch without a weapon. King  used a thumb and a finger to simulate a gun. Unfortunately, he failed to keep his hand in  his pocket. (hellooooooo)!

  2. *THE GRAND FINALE!* Last  summer, down on Lake Isabella, located in the high desert, an hour east  of

    Bakersfield, CA, some folks new to boating were having a problem.  No matter how hard they tried, they couldn’t get  their brand new 22 foot boat going.  It was very sluggish in almost every maneuver no  matter how much power they applied.

After about an hour of trying to make it go they  putted into a nearby marina, thinking someone there may be able to tell them what was wrong.  A thorough topside check revealed everything in perfect working condition. The engine ran fine, the out-drive went up and down, and the propeller was the correct size and pitch.  So, one of the marina guys jumped in the water to check  underneath. He came up choking on water, he  was laughing so hard.  Under the boat, still strapped  securely in place, was the  trailer!

After these things I heard something like a loud voice of a great multitude in heaven, saying, “Hallelujah! Salvation and glory and power belong to our God;

Then I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, “Do not do that; I am a fellow servant of yours and your brethren who hold the testimony of Jesus; worship God. For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war.

His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself.

He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.

Here is the perseverance of the saints who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus.

And I heard a voice from heaven, saying, “Write, ‘Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on!"” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “so that they may rest from their labors, for their deeds follow with them.”

Then I looked, and behold, a white cloud, and sitting on the cloud was one like a son of man, having a golden crown on His head and a sharp sickle in His hand.

And another angel came out of the temple, crying out with a loud voice to Him who sat on the cloud, “Put in your sickle and reap, for the hour to reap has come, because the harvest of the earth is ripe.”

Then He who sat on the cloud swung His sickle over the earth, and the earth was reaped.

And another angel came out of the temple which is in heaven, and he also had a sharp sickle.

Then another angel, the one who has power over fire, came out from the altar; and he called with a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, saying, “Put in your sharp sickle and gather the clusters from the vine of the earth, because her grapes are ripe.”

So the angel swung his sickle to the earth and gathered the clusters from the vine of the earth, and threw them into the great wine press of the wrath of God.

And the wine press was trodden outside the city, and blood came out from the wine press, up to the horses’ bridles, for a distance of two hundred miles.

Paul worshiped both God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ who he says (from prison) had blessed the Ephesian Christians and himself“ with every spiritual blessing in the Heavenly places in Christ.” Underline in your understanding that we Christians (an extension of these Ephesians because the Bible is intended for every Christian throughout the ages) ARE RIGHT NOW receiving “EVERY spiritual blessing in the Heavenly places in Christ.”It is typical of Christians today to greatly question any hard moments in their lives. That is because they haven’t fully grasped the heart of Romans 8:28 – “ALL things work TOGETHER for good to those who love God and are called according to His purpose.” Especially important in that verse are the words ALL and TOGETHER. It is not only the precious, wonderful, obviously blessed moments in life that a Christian should praise God for. The terrible moments, the hard days, weeks, months or years may seem chaotic to us but they are of every purpose in Christ to make us individually who we are meant to become IF we don’t despair and give up our faith in what Christ is doing (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Remember, God made this beautiful world out of chaos. To be blessed with every spiritual blessing is something those without Christ cannot experience.

“The 11th hour of the 11TH DAY OF THE 11TH MONTH of 1918, World War I ended.


Though the Armistice was signed at 5:00 AM on NOVEMBER 11, 1918, the fighting continued till 11:00 AM, killing nearly 11,000 more men.


In 1921, President Warren Harding had the remains of an unknown soldier killed in France buried in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington Cemetery.


Inscribed on the Tomb are the words:


“Here rests in honored glory an American soldier known but to God.”


On October 4, 1924, at the dedication of the monument to the American Expeditionary Forces in Washington, D.C., President Calvin Coolidge stated:


“They did not regard it as a national or personal opportunity for gain or fame or glory, but as a call to sacrifice for the support of humane principles and spiritual ideals…


If anyone doubts the depth and sincerity of the attachment of the American people to their institutions and Government, if anyone doubts the sacrifices which they have been willing to make in behalf of those institutions and for what they believe to be the welfare of other nations,


let them gaze upon this monument and other like memorials that have been reared in every quarter of our broad land.


Let them look upon the representative gatherings of our VETERANS, and let them remember that America has dedicated itself to the service of God and man.”


Armistice Day was changed to VETERANS DAY in 1954 to honor all who have served defending the United States.

In 1958, President Eisenhower placed soldiers in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from WWII and the Korean War.


In 1984, President Ronald Reagan placed a soldier from the Vietnam War in the tomb.


DNA test later identified him as pilot Michael Blassie, a graduate of St. Louis University Highschool, 1966, and the U.S. Air Force Academy, 1970.


Flying an A-37B Dragonfly, he was shot down near An Loc, South Vietnam.


In 1998, Michael Blassie was reburied at Jefferson Memorial Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri.


On NOVEMBER 11, 1921, President Harding stated:


“On the threshold of eternity, many a soldier, I can well believe, wondered how his ebbing blood would color the stream of human life, flowing on after his sacrifice…


I can sense the prayers of our people… Let me join in that prayer.


Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come…”


Charles Michael Province, U.S. Army, wrote the poem:

It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer

Eisenhower continued:

On February 20, 1955, President Dwight Eisenhower stated for the American Legion Back-To-God Program:


“The Founding Fathers expressed in words for all to read the ideal of

President Dwight Eisenhower concluded:


“Each day we must ask that Almighty God will set and keep His protecting hand over us

From the headquarters of reachmorenow.com in Fort Worth, Texas, this is Ray Mossholder and this is the news.


 


This prayer request came from my friend Giff Claiborne. He writes:


We received these two emails from missionary friends, one yesterday and one this morning. I pass it on so that people can pray specifically for our brothers and sisters.


This is so sad. A friend from Ohio just got a text message from her brother asking her to shower him and his parish in prayer. He is part of a mission team and ISIS has taken over the town they are in today. He said ISIS is systematically going house to house to all the Christians and asking the children to denounce Jesus. He said so far not one child has. And so far all have consequently been killed. But not the parents. The UN has withdrawn and the missionaries are on their own. They are determined to stick it out for the sake of the families – even if it means their own deaths.


Our friend is very afraid. He has no idea how to even begin ministering to these families who have seen their children martyred. Yet he says he knows God has called him for some reason to be His voice and hands at this place at this time. Even so, he is begging prayers for his courage to live out his vocation in such dire circumstances. And like the children, accept martyrdom if he is called to do so. He asked me to ask everyone we know to please pray for him and his wife. These brave parents instilled such a fervent faith in their children that they chose martyrdom.


Please surround them in their loss with your prayers for hope and perseverance. Our friend in Ohio was able to talk to her missionary brother briefly by phone. She didn’t say it but I believe she believes it will be their last conversation. Pray for her too.


She said he just kept asking her to help him know what to do and do it. She told him to tell the families we ARE praying for them and they are not alone or forgotten — no matter what.


Her email broke my heart. Please keep all in your prayers.

Then this came


This morning, just a few minutes ago I received the following text message on my phone from Sean Malone who leads Crisis Relief International (CRI). We then spoke briefly on the phone and I assured him that we would share this urgent prayer need with all of our contacts.


Here’s what Sean told me: “We lost the city of Queragosh (Qaraqosh). It fell to ISIS and they are beheading children systematically. This is the city we have been smuggling food too. ISIS has pushed back Peshmerga (Kurdish forces) and is within 10 minutes of where our CRI team is working.


Thousands more fled into the city of Erbil last night. The UN evacuated it’s staff in Erbil. Our team is unmoved and will stay. Prayer cover needed!”


 


Please pray sincerely for the deliverance of the people of Northern Iraq from the terrible advancement of ISIS and its extreme Islamic goal for mass conversion or death for Christians across this region.

After Giff sent his e-mail, he received this email in return from another friend of his – Ted Beckett. It is one of the finest


 


Giff:


Thank you for informing Audrey and me of the exceptional need of believing intercession for the brave souls with Crisis Relief International, and others ministering in the city of Qaragosh, Iraq.  I was touched by one request that the ladies brother kept repeating “She said, he just kept asking her to help him know what to do and do it”.


In my view, faced with a similar, dire situation, Jesus, Peter or Paul, would have rebuked the territorial evil spirits that were driving the ISIS forces and command them to withdraw.  As believers, our war is not with the individual soldiers doing their grisly work, it is with the evil spirits driving them to do it.


After considering this issue carefully, I sensed that all of us praying about this matter, as well as the brave minister in Iraq should stand on 3 vital Scriptures that are most appropriate for this critical situation.


1.  And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; Mark 16:17


2.  Behold, I (Jesus) give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Luke 10:19


     3. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world,      against spiritual wickedness in high places.  Ephesians 6:12


Some ministers erroneously teach that Christians should refrain from rebuking these demonic authorities.  But God’s Word is clear on this issue and when believers timidly cease from taking their God given authority, the enemy runs roughshod over them like he is doing in Qaragosh.  The Lord even provided a promise of immunity from counter-attack in Luke 10:19.


Also, ISIS is the name of a very important god of that region.  ISIS was considered “more powerful than a thousand soldiers”.  Because ISIS’ name means, literally, “throne” in the Ancient Egyptian language, she is usually represented with a throne as a depiction of her power.  I do not believe it is a coincidence that the militant Islamic army attempting to reestablish a “throne” in the region came up with the name ISIS.  All intercessors should bind the Isis demon.  Included is a depiction of that evil spirit.


Another way to pray for this situation is to ask the Lord to convict every ISIS foot-soldier of the absurdity of the belief that he will earn a place in heaven by raping women and decapitating innocent children.  If we as believers remove the blindness from their eyes, these murderers will begin to abandon ISIS.


Pray that these butchers will be considered a laughing stock and the scum of the Muslim community.


Pray that US and allied bombers accuracy will be true to wipe out the command and control centers of ISIS and their leadership.  Pray for the Lord to convict them with dreams of Jesus.  We as believers need to awake and become proactive on this issue.


I would also encourage the brother in Qaragosh to minister to whatever children may be left. Make sure they have accepted Jesus and are all born again believers, filled with the Holy Spirit and being taught the Word.  Mobilize these children into prayer teams armed with the authority of the Holy Spirit and commanding the evil spirits to come out of the demonically controlled black-robed cowards.  Matthew 21:15

DOES GOD EXPECT CHRISTIANS TO TITHE FOR FINANCIAL BLESSINGS?

Is Tithing Required in the New Covenant?



 


Does the Bible tell us to pay at least 10 percent of our incomes to the church?


Abraham and Jacob


The first biblical mention of tithing is in Genesis 14. After four Mesopotamian kings had taken Lot captive, Abraham attacked them and recovered all the booty. After his victory, the king of Sodom came out to meet him, and so did Melchizedek, a priest of Goen Abraham “gave him a tenth of everything” (Genesis 14:20).


The text does not tell us whether Abraham had ever tithed before, or ever tithed afterwards. Perhaps it was a custom of his culture. Abraham was generous, and gave the rest of his booty to the king of Sodom (verses 23-24). Abraham kept all of God’s laws that were relevant in his day (Genesis 26:5), but Genesis does not tell us whether tithing was a law in Abraham’s day. Many of God’s decrees and requirements were built around the nation of Israel and the Levitical priesthood and tabernacle. Abraham could not have kept such decrees and laws. He may have tithed regularly, but we cannot prove it.


The next mention of tithing is in Genesis 28:20-22. Jacob had a miraculous dream at Bethel. In the morning, Jacob vowed to tithe if God helped him during his journey. He was trying to make a bargain with God. He wanted special help, and in return for that help, he was willing to worship God, and to tithe as a part of that worship. Tithing may have been part of the common worship practices of that time and culture, or it may have been an extra-special vow for those who desperately desired divine help.


Firstlings


Biblical commands about tithing are generally about grain, wine and oil.1 A different system of giving was required for some animals. In the last plague on Egypt, God killed the firstborn male of every animal and human, but he spared the Israelites and their animals. Therefore, God claimed ownership of every Israelite firstborn and firstling male animal (Exodus 13:2Numbers 3:13).


This applied not only to the generation that left Egypt,but every future generation as well. Firstlings of clean animals were to be given to the priests and sacrificed (Numbers 18:15-17); priests and people ate them during the festivals (Deuteronomy 15:19-2012:61714:23). Unclean animals and humans were to be redeemed (Exodus 13:12-1534:19-20). This continued to be the law in Nehemiah’s day (Nehemiah 10:36) and in Jesus’ day (Luke 2:23).


The people also gave firstfruits of their harvest (Exodus 23:1934:26Leviticus 2:14), but these firstfruits do not seem to be a fixed percentage.


Tithes


Tithing was required on flocks: “every tenth animal that passes under the shepherd’s rod”(Leviticus 27:32). Was this in addition to the firstlings, or was it instead of firstlings? We do not know exactly how these laws would be administered. It is not necessary for us to take a position on these details.


“A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord; it is holy to the Lord” (Leviticus 27:30).4 The tithes and firstfruits belonged to God, and he assigned the Levites to receive them on his behalf (Numbers 18:12-132124). They could keep 90 percent of what they were given, but had to give 10 percent as an offering (verses 26-32).


Tithing was done in the days of Hezekiah (2 Chr. 31:5-6), Nehemiah (Nehemiah 10:35-3912:44) and Jesus (Matthew 23:23Luke 11:42). In Malachi’s day, tithing was required (Malachi 3:8-10), and physical blessings were promised for obedience, just as physical blessings were promised for obedience to the old covenant.


Additional tithes?


God gave the tithes to the Levites, but the people could eat their tithes during festivals (Deuteronomy 12:5-717-1914:23). Some have concluded that Deuteronomy is talking about an additional tithe, a festival tithe. It is possible to have two tithes, but it is not possible to have two sets of firstborn animals. The firstlings were holy to the Lord, and given to the Levites (Numbers 18:15-17), but Deuteronomy 15:19-20 says that they were eaten by the people. Apparently the firstlings were shared between the original owners and the Levites. It is possible that the same is true of the tithe.5


The people needed a tithe for the festivals, since the festivals constituted about 5 percent of the year, plus travel time. During sabbatical years, farmers would not have their regular income, so they may not have been able to go to every festival in every year. Or perhaps they saved the festival tithe from year to year.


At the end of every three years of farming, the Israelites were to set aside a tithe for the Levites, resident aliens, orphans and widows (Deuteronomy 14:28-2926:12-15). It is not clear whether this was an alternative use of a previous tithe, or an additional tithe.6


Tithing in the new covenant


Now let us consider whether tithing is required in the new covenant. Tithing is mentioned only three or four times in the New Testament. Jesus acknowledged that the Pharisees were very careful about tithing (Luke 18:12), and he said that they should not leave it undone (Matthew 23:23Luke 11:42). Tithing, like other old covenant rules and rituals, was a law at the time Jesus spoke. Jesus criticized the Pharisees not for tithing, but for treating tithing as more important than mercy, love, justice and faithfulness.


The only other New Testament mention of tithing is in Hebrews. The fact that Abraham was blessed by and gave tithes to Melchizedek illustrates the superiority of Melchizedek and Jesus Christ over the Levitical priesthood (Hebrews 7:1-10). The passage then goes on to note that “when the priesthood is changed, the law must be changed also” (verse 12).


There was a change of the priesthood from the Levites to Jesus Christ, and this implies a change in the law that assigned the Levites to be priests. How much has been changed? Hebrews says that the old covenant is obsolete. The package of laws that commanded tithes to be given to the Levites is obsolete.


Humans should honor God by voluntarily returning some of the blessings he gives them — this is still a valid principle. The only place that a percentage is required is within the old covenant. There is good precedent for tithing before Sinai, but no proof that it was required.


Responding to the better covenant


Under the old covenant, tithing was required for the support of the old covenant ministers. The Israelites were required to give 10 percent — and their blessing was only a physical one! Christians in the new covenant have much better blessings — spiritual ones. How much more willingly ought we to give in thankfulness for the eternal blessings we have in Christ Jesus?


The Israelites were commanded to give 10 percent under a covenant that could not make them perfect (Hebrews 7:199:9). How much more joyfully should we give to God under the new covenant? We have the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, which does cleanse our conscience (9:14). And yet it seems that in America today, even though we have so much more than the Israelites did, people give on average a much smaller percentage. Many people give less to the church than they spend on luxury items. Some people cannot give very much, but many people could if they wanted to. God calls on us to examine ourselves, to examine our priorities, and to be generous.


The old covenant gave us condemnation; the new covenant gives us justification and peace with God. How much more should we be willing to give freely and generously so God’s work can be done in the world — to proclaim the gospel, to declare the new covenant ministry that gives us true life, and gives that message of life to others?


People who entrust their lives to Jesus Christ do not worry about whether tithing is commanded in the New Testament. People who are being transformed by Christ to be more like Christ are generous. They want to give as much as possible to support the gospel and to support the poor. Christians should give generously — but giving is a result of their relationship with God, not a way to earn it. We are given grace through faith, not through tithing.


Some people act as if Christ liberates us from the law so that we can keep more physical blessings for ourselves. That is false — Christ liberates us so that we can be free to serve him more, as loving children and not merely as slaves. He frees us so we can have faith instead of selfishness.


When it comes to money, the real question is, Is our heart in the gospel of Jesus Christ? Are we putting our money where our heart is? We can tell where our heart is by seeing where we are putting our money. “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also,” Jesus said (Matthew 6:21).


Needs in the new covenant ministry


In the new covenant church, there are financial needs — to support the poor, and to support the gospel by supporting those who preach it. Christians are obligated to give financial support for these needs. Let’s see how Paul explained this obligation in his second letter to the Corinthians.


Paul describes himself as a minister of the new covenant (2 Corinthians 3:6), which has much greater glory than the old (verse 8). Because of what Christ did for him in the new covenant, Christ’s love compelled Paul to preach the gospel, the message of reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:11-21).


Paul exhorted the Corinthians “not to receive God’s grace in vain” (6:1). How were they in danger of doing this? Paul had gone out of his way to serve them, but they were withholding their affections from him (6:3-12). He asked them for a fair exchange, for them to open their hearts to him (6:13).


Paul told the Corinthians that they had a duty to give something in response to what they had been given. This response comes in terms of morality (6:14-7:1), which the Corinthians had done (7:8-13), and in terms of affection, which the Corinthians had also done (7:2-7), and in financial generosity, which Paul addresses in chapter 8. This is the way in which the Corinthians had closed their hearts to Paul and withheld their affections.


Paul cited the example of the Macedonian churches, who had given generously, even to the point of self-sacrifice (8:1-5). The example is powerful; the implications are strong that the Corinthians needed to respond to Paul’s sacrifices by making sacrifices themselves. But Paul did not make a command (8:8). Instead, he asked first for a turning of the heart. He wanted the Corinthians to give themselves to the Lord first, and then to support Paul. He wanted their gift to be done in sincere love, not from compulsion (8:5, 8). Paul reminded them that Christ had become poor for their sakes; the implication is that the Corinthians should make financial sacrifices in return.


But then Paul reminded the Corinthians that they could not give more than they had (8:12). Nor did they have to impoverish themselves to enrich others; Paul was only aiming for equity (8:13-14). Paul again expressed confidence in their willingness to give, and added the peer pressure of the Macedonian example and the boasting he had done in Macedonia about the generosity of the Corinthians (8:24-9:5).


Paul again noted that the offering must be done willingly, not from compulsion or given grudgingly (9:5, 7). He reminded them that God rewards generosity (9:6-11) and that a good example causes people to praise God and puts the gospel in a favorable setting (9:12-14).


This was a collection for the poor in Judea. But Paul said nothing about tithing. Rather, he appealed to the new covenant environment: Christ had made many sacrifices for them, so they ought to be willing to make a few sacrifices to help one another.


In asking for this offering, Paul was also making a financial sacrifice. He had a right to receive financial support himself, but instead of that, he was asking that the offering be given to others. Paul had not asked for any financial support from Corinth (11:7-11; 12:13-16). Instead, he had been supported by Macedonians (11:9).


Paul had a right to be supported by the Corinthians, but he did not use it (1 Corinthians 9:3-15). This passage tells us more about our Christian duty to give financial support to the gospel. Workers should be able to receive benefits of their work (9:7). The old covenant even made provision for oxen to be given benefits of their work (9:9).


Throughout his appeal, Paul does not cite any laws of tithing. He says that priests received benefits from their work in the temple (9:13), but he does not cite any percentage. Their example is cited in the same way as the example of soldiers, vineyard workers, herdsmen, oxen, plowers and threshers. It is simply a general principle. As Jesus said, “The worker deserves his wages” (Luke 10:7). Paul cited the oxen and wages scriptures again in 1 Timothy 5:17-18. Elders, especially those who preach and teach, should be honored financially as well as with respect.


Jesus also commanded, “those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel” (1 Corinthians 9:14). This implies that those who believe should provide a living for some who preach. There is a financial duty, and there is a promised reward for generosity (though that reward may not necessarily be physical or financial).


A need to be generous


Christians have received riches of God’s grace, and are to respond with generosity and giving. Christians are called to a life of service, sharing and stewardship. We have an obligation to do good. When we give ourselves to the Lord, we will give generously.


Jesus often taught about money. “Sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me,” said Jesus to a rich man (Luke 18:22). He said the same thing to his disciples (12:33). The new covenant demands all that we have, and that is fair, since Jesus gave all he had for us. He praised a widow who put two coins into the temple treasury, because she gave “all she had” (21:4).


Wealth is often an enemy of faith. It can “choke” people and cause them to be spiritually unfruitful (8:14). “Woe to you who are rich,” Jesus warned (6:24). He warned us about the dangers of greed (12:15) and warned about the danger of storing up wealth for self without being “rich toward God” (12:16-21). When we use wealth to help others, we gain “treasure in heaven” (12:33). This helps us have our heart in heavenly things instead of earthly, temporary things (12:34).


“No servant can serve two masters…. You cannot serve both God and money” (16:13). But money competes for our allegiance; it tempts us to seek our own desires rather than the needs of the kingdom. After the rich man went away sad, Jesus exclaimed: “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! Indeed, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God” (18:24-25).

Conclusion


Christians need to give, to share their resources and blessings with others. They have a duty to support the preaching of the gospel, to give financial support to their spiritual leaders, and the church needs this support. If disciples of Jesus Christ can give, but do not, they are falling short.


The old covenant required 10 percent. The new covenant does not specify a percentage, nor do we. However, the new covenant admonishes people to give what they can, and tithing still provides an instructive point of comparison. For some people, 10 percent may be too much. But some will be able to give more, and some are doing so. Christians should examine their own circumstances and the better blessings they have been given in the new covenant through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ for us and the gift of the Holy Spirit to us. Contributions should be given to the church for its collective work of preaching the gospel and the expenses involved in the local ministry and congregational needs.


Likewise, the new covenant does not specify any particular percentage for assisting the poor. Instead, it asks for equity — and we certainly have room for improvement in this.


The old covenant required simple percentages. Everyone knew how much was required. The new covenant has no set percentages. Instead, it requires more soul-searching, more training for the conscience, more selfless love for others, more faith, more voluntary sacrifice and less compulsion. It tests our values, what we treasure most, and where our hearts are.

1 The Bible describes tithing in an agricultural economy. It does not tell us whether, or how, potters, carpenters, merchants, etc. calculated tithes.


2 For the generation that left Egypt, God made a grand substitution: Instead of the firstborn male of each family and flock, God accepted the tribe of Levi and all its animals (Numbers 3:40-508:16-18).


3 It is not clear how this worked. Was the entire flock counted, or only the lambs? In bad years, the flock would come back no larger than it had been the previous year, so it wouldn’t make sense to tithe on all the adults again, since there would have been no increase. Perhaps the “rod” served in some way to separate lambs from adults.


4 It might be argued that the tithes were holy and therefore had always been holy, even before the old covenant was made. That is possible, but it cannot be proven. The Mishnah, however, combines the festival tithe and the poor tithe: the second tithe being used for the festival in years 1, 2, 4 and 5, and being used for the poor in years 3 and 6 out of the seven-year farming cycle (Sanders, p. 149). Since farmers had an increase in only six out of every seven years, they gave on average 3.3 percent of their increase to the poor. If tradesmen tithed (and no biblical law required them to) they would give about 2.8 percent on average, since they had income even during sabbatical and jubilee years.
