LB–TK: Darkening Skies Chs 3&4 The Chase, Tragic News

Judd and Lionel don’t know what to think. Samuel, who once gave Judd a video showing the killing of Rabbi Ben Judah’s family, seemingly turned on them in front of his father who is a worker with Global Community. But that was just in front of his father. As soon as the three teenagers were away from his dad, he gave Judd a piece of paper with the address of a safe house where they could hide. That’s where they are now in the home of Jamal. Meanwhile, GC police have accused Buck of murder and he is being hunted along with Rabbi Ben Judah.

Meanwhile, in Chicago, Melinda ran off from the Young Tribulation Force and has just been arrested by the GC police. Ray picks the story up at this point.


MARK parked his cycle and walked past a few stores. He wondered if Melinda had told the peacekeepers about the Young Trib Force and their hideout. He studied shop windows as he listened to the squawking radios.

“Still waiting for the fingerprint ID,” one officer said.

“She sure looks like the photo,” another said. “Wonder how she wound up here?”

Mark walked into a small grocery store and watched the GC officers through the window. He bought a pack of gum and asked the girl at the cash register what happened.

“She ran in here out of breath,” the girl said. “Real dirty. Looked like she’d spent the night in the woods. I figured it was one of those women who escaped from the GC prison I’ve been hearing about on the news.”

“There was a breakout?” Mark said.

“Yeah. One of those reeducation camps or whatever you call them. When that girl saw the squad car go by, she freaked. Hid behind one of the aisles back there. I went outside and flagged ’em down.”

“You’re pretty much a hero,” Mark said.

The girl blushed. “I didn’t do nothin’. Just figured she had to be guilty of something, the way she acted.”

Mark thanked the girl and left. A small bell rang as he opened the door, and the Peacekeepers glanced at him. Mark walked the other way.

The radio squawked. “Here’s the report,” a man said. “We have a negative on the downstate facility. Your girl is MM-1215, Melinda Bentley.” The man read off more information about Melinda. “You’re instructed to interrogate, then carry out GC order X-13.”

The peacekeepers looked at each other. “Can you repeat that?”

“Interrogate and carry out an X-13. Over.”

The peacekeeper sighed. “Ten four, we copy. Out.”

Mark didn’t know what an X-13 was, but it didn’t sound good for Melinda. He turned the corner and walked his motorcycle closer. He wanted to hear the GC question Melinda.

“We know who you are,” a peacekeeper said. “Who’s been hiding you?”

“I was staying with some friends,” Melinda said.

“Who?”

Vicki met with Chloe later in the day. Chloe hobbled around on a cane, needing crutches but unable to manage them with her sprained wrist. Chloe brought Vicki up to date on the adult Tribulation Force. Buck’s coworker, Verna Zee, was back at the Global Community office and would return later that night.

“We need your advice about Darrion and Mrs. Stahley,” Vicki said. “Where do you think they should stay?”

“Here,” Chloe said. She told Vicki where to find a key in the kitchen. “Bring them over while we take Buck to Palwaukee Airport. Verna’s staying downstairs. You can put Mrs. Stahley and Darrion in the garage apartment. It’s not fancy, but no one will find them.”

“What about Loretta?” Vicki said. “She’ll need to know.”

“I’ll tell Loretta,” Chloe said. “You stay with them and bring whatever they need. I’ll have Loretta say you’re trying to get over Bruce’s death and you need a little privacy.”

“That wouldn’t be far from the truth,” Vicki said.

Ray begins Book 10 of Left Behind – The Kids. The Young Tribulation Force – Judd, Vicki, Ryan, Lionel, and Chaya, are staying with their late pastor’s secretary. Their money has been restored by Darrion Stahley’s mother, thankful that the Young Tribulation Force has just saved Darrion from a kidnapping that very well might have ended up with her and Ryan dead. But right now Judd is waking from a nightmare about something that has reportedly actually happened.

“Judd, help!”

The girl sounded desperate. He tried to place her voice, but he couldn’t. Judd called back, but she didn’t seem to hear.

“Judd, we need you! Hurry!”

“Nina!” Judd said as he awoke. He tried to shake the dream but couldn’t. Judd had met Nina in Israel while traveling with Bruce. Because her father was such an outspoken Jewish believer, Nina, her brother, Dan, and Mrs. Ben Judah were in constant danger.

Nina’s helpless cry haunted Judd as he collected himself. There was a pain deep in his chest. Could the previous day have been a dream? Could Bruce really be dead? Judd sat up and listened to voices in the other room. Judd had come to Loretta’s – Bruce’s secretary at the New Home Village Church – house when he heard Chloe Williams was in trouble. The search for Ryan had been exhausting. Judd had fallen asleep before he found out what happened to Chloe, and now he listened as Loretta and Buck Williams talked in hushed tones in the kitchen

“Stop treating us like little kids,” Lionel said at breakfast Friday morning. “It’s not right to have meetings without us.”

Ryan was furious. “Mark is our friend, too,” he said. “We’ve got a right to know what’s going on.”

“I was afraid you’d want to follow him,” Judd said. “What was I supposed to do?”

“Let us go see Bruce then.”

“Can’t. Sorry.”

“See,” Ryan said. “This is the same thing.”

“They won’t let you in,” Judd said. “Maybe when he’s feeling better.”

“I’m going to send him a card,” Ryan muttered as he slammed the door.

Judd called Loretta for the latest on Bruce. She said, “He rested through the night and told me he wants to be out in time to meet Rayford and the rest tomorrow.”

“So that’s what he meant about meeting people for lunch,” Judd said. “Is Captain Steele flying Carpathia into the country?”

“I don’t have a clue.”

Vicki drove Chaya to the hospital Friday morning and saw Chaya’s mother and father walk in. Chaya left a bouquet of flowers at the front desk for her mother. They asked about Bruce, but the nurses were tightlipped.”

Patricia Devlin, the head nurse, said, “Family members?”

Vicki said “Daughter.”

“No change,” the nurse said. “Check back later.”

“I can’t even see my own father?”

“Ms. Devlin peered at Vicki over her glasses. “You look a little too old to be his daughter,” she said. “But anyway, his doctor says no visitors until his illness is identified.”

Four Months Later

Judd looked at the test questions, and his heart sank. He knew the answers, but the truth wasn’t what his teacher, Mister Syncrete, wanted. Judd had no problems all year in trigonometry or English. He had a running feud with the biology teachers over evolution, but he could back up his beliefs with scientific data. Religion class threatened his dream of becoming valedictorian.

Judd proudly wore the cross in Mister  Syncrete’s class. The Global Community required religious education for graduation. Judd struggled not to make waves, but at times he couldn’t keep silent.

The class had begun with an overview of the Enigma Babylon One World Faith. Mr. Syncrete praised its leader, Pontifex Maximus Peter, for ushering in what he called a “new era of tolerance and unity” among all major religions. Mr. Syncrete spend hours on Eastern religions and spoke in glowing terms of animistic beliefs – that even objects have souls. Guest lecturers explained everything from worship of ancestors to yoga. But the teacher’s demeanor soured when he covered Judaism. And when Christianity finally came up, his attitude got even worse.

“The Jews believe in one God who let them be annihilated in the Holocaust,” Mr. Syncrete said with a sneer. “And the Christians have three Gods who did the same. It’s an irrational, superstitious belief system.”

According to Mr. Syncrete, the biggest enemies of the new OneWorld faith were the millions who believed Jesus was the only way to God. He scoffed at those who dared disagree. He read word for word the statement of Pontifex Maximus Peter concerning Christians:

To say arbitrarily, Pope Peter wrote,“that the Jewish and Protestant Bible, containing only the Old and New Testaments, is the final authority for faith and practice, represents the height of intolerance and disunity. It flies in the face of all we have accomplished. Those who agree with that false doctrine are hereby considered heretics.”
